About Nuisance Noise Recorder
Record noise disturbances automatically with Nuisance Noise Recorder, an app designed to capture and document sound events that exceed a threshold you set. This tool helps you build a factual record of noise issues—whether to prove or disprove a nuisance complaint in your area.
The app monitors ambient sound levels continuously while displayed on your screen. When noise crosses your chosen decibel limit, it captures a 30-second audio clip and logs the event with precise location data via GPS. You set the threshold by observing real-world noise and adjusting the app a few points below the decibel value at which the disturbance occurs. You can also document conditions that affect sound travel, such as brick walls, wooden flooring, open windows, or fence lines, plus the approximate distance to the noise source.
Review all recorded events by date using a dual 12-hour clock display (AM and PM). Each sound file plays back directly in the app, and you can remove any clips you don't need. The audio files are standard WAV format, compatible with Windows and Android devices. A companion CSV log captures metadata for every event—timestamps, decibel readings, GPS coordinates—so you can analyze patterns over time or share the data with others.
When you're confident in your recordings, export the audio and event log as a compressed zip file (via in-app purchase). Transfer this to your computer, upload to cloud storage like Dropbox or Google Drive, or use it as documentation if needed. The CSV opens in any text editor or spreadsheet application.
Nuisance Noise Recorder works with both the internal microphone and external mics connected via 3.5mm audio jack. Android uses whichever microphone is available, prioritizing an external mic if one is detected. Note that not all extension cables support microphone input—you'll need a 4-pole connector, and some phones may have impedance issues with extensions.
The app pauses recording during incoming calls and resumes afterward, so you won't miss events. Modern phones include noise-cancelling algorithms that can affect audio capture in various conditions, which may impact performance depending on your device and environment.
Nuisance Noise Recorder is straightforward to operate: launch it, set your decibel threshold, and let it listen. Keep the app visible and running on your screen while it monitors. Built and tested on multiple Android devices, this app gives you a simple, verifiable way to track and document noise disturbances over time.
